RingDrive engagement

Chris King's patented RingDrive system uses 72 simultaneously interfacing points of contact inside the freehub, which is what gives King hubs their distinctive buzz when coasting. That many contact points also means near-instant engagement when you start pedalling again, which matters most on technical terrain or a loaded touring bike where you want power to the wheel the moment you need it.

Sealed angular-contact bearings

Unlike standard radial cartridge bearings that simply fail once worn, Chris King's angular-contact bearings can be adjusted as they wear rather than failing outright, and serviced rather than replaced. Properly maintained, they're built to last decades, which is the case for paying a premium up front.

King Lifetime Warranty

Chris King backs this hub's bearings and construction with a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser against defects in materials and workmanship. Register it within 30 days of purchase to speed up any future claim.

Portland manufacturing

Chris King designs, machines, and assembles every hub at its own factory in Portland, Oregon — it isn't outsourced. That in-house control is part of why the brand can back its hardware with a genuine lifetime warranty rather than a token one.

Frame / axle:

Boost 148x12mm rear axle spacing — check your frame’s rear axle standard before ordering. Does NOT fit 142x12mm or quick-release rear ends.

Brakes:

Centerlock rotor mount — fits Centerlock rotors directly. 6-bolt rotors work with a Centerlock-to-6-bolt adapter (sold separately). Not for rim-brake wheels.

Drivetrain:

Choose your driver standard — Micro Spline, Shimano HG, or SRAM XD — at checkout to match your cassette. Not sure which you need? Check your current cassette/freehub standard, or email Auren before ordering.

Wheel build:

Supplied as a bare hub — must be laced to a rim to build a wheel. Spoke count: choose 28H or 32H to match your rim. Auren can build this into a complete wheel for you.

Tools needed: matching 148x12mm rear thru-axle, Centerlock lockring tool, torque wrench. Lacing the hub into a wheel is a wheelbuilder job.

1

Build into a wheel. This hub comes as a bare hub — have it laced to a compatible 28H or 32H rim with spokes before anything else. Auren can build the wheel for you if you'd rather not source a builder.

2

Fit the rotor. Mount a Centerlock disc rotor and tighten the lockring to the rotor maker's torque spec (typically around 40 Nm).

3

Fit the wheel. Slide the wheel into the frame's Boost 148x12mm rear dropouts and torque the axle to the frame manufacturer's spec.

4

Confirm drivetrain fit. Before riding, double-check the driver you selected at purchase (Micro Spline, Shimano HG, or SRAM XD) matches your cassette.

5

Check it spins true. Lift the rear wheel and spin it — confirm the rotor runs true in the caliper and the cassette engages cleanly under load.

Chris King Precision Components was founded in 1976 in Santa Barbara, California, when Chris King set out to build a better bicycle headset, and the company now manufactures entirely in-house at its own factory in Portland, Oregon. It's best known for its sealed angular-contact bearings and the distinctive buzzing freehub sound on its hubs, both of which have become a kind of signature within serious cycling circles. Every component is designed to be fully serviceable and rebuildable rather than replaced, backed by a genuine lifetime warranty on its core products, and the brand was the first in the bike industry to meet B Corporation sustainability standards. Its bright, anodised colourways have also made it something of a status marker on a build — riders notice Chris King hubs. On a custom titanium build, Chris King represents the premium end of the parts spec: a component chosen by riders who want investment-grade hardware that will outlast the rest of the bike.

Auren designs and builds in Melbourne. One workshop, one builder, frames made by the person you can actually reach.

Every Auren titanium bike comes out of a simple idea. Founder and engineer Will Young wanted to build custom titanium the way it should be done: a frame shaped around the rider, not picked from a range. Your geometry, your parts, your bike, designed with you from the first conversation to the final build.

Building direct means there's no dealer between you and us. When you're planning a build, talking through your fit, or need something sorted years down the track, you talk to Will, the person who made the bike. Every Auren titanium is built to last decades and backed by real support that doesn't disappear after delivery.

That's reflected in our reviews: five stars across Google and Trustpilot.
