The PL-7 generates its own electricity as the wheel turns — 6V at 3W, the standard for bike dynamo systems. That runs a dynamo headlight and taillight indefinitely with no batteries to charge, and with a separate USB converter it can charge a phone, GPS, or battery pack on the move. It meets the German StVZO 6V3W regulation, so it works with the full range of dynamo lights and chargers on the market.
SP tunes the PL-7 for low resistance, so with the lights off the hub costs you very little extra effort — the reason a good dynamo hub can stay on the bike full-time rather than only on tour. The drag you feel with the light on is simply the power being generated. Over a long day it's a fair trade for never running out of light or charge.
The bearings are sealed cartridges that keep water, dust, and grit out. That matters on a hub built for long tours, wet commutes, and bikepacking, where it's exposed to weather for days at a time. It keeps the hub spinning smoothly and stretches out the service interval.
At around 375g it's one of SP's lighter dynamo hubs, giving roughly the same output as heavier models for less weight. On a touring or bikepacking build where every part adds up, that's meaningful without giving up durability.
Fits forks with a 12mm thru-axle and 100mm spacing (100x12mm) — standard on most modern disc road, gravel, and MTB forks.
Does NOT fit quick-release (QR) or 15mm thru-axle forks.
Centerlock rotor mount — fits Centerlock rotors directly.
6-bolt rotors work with a Centerlock-to-6-bolt adapter (sold separately).
Not for rim-brake wheels.
Supplied as a bare hub — must be laced to a rim to build a wheel.
Spoke count: choose 28H or 32H to match your rim.
J-bend spokes. Suits 26″ and 700C rims (road, gravel, touring, MTB).
Works with any standard 6V/3W dynamo light (StVZO) — e.g. Busch & Müller, SON, Sinewave.
USB / device charging needs a dynamo-to-USB converter (e.g. Sinewave, kLite, Forumslader), sold separately.
Tools needed: matching 12mm thru-axle, Centerlock lockring tool, torque wrench, and your dynamo light or USB converter with its wiring. Lacing the hub into a wheel is a wheelbuilder job.
Build into a wheel. The PL-7 comes as a bare hub — have it laced to a compatible 28H or 32H rim with spokes before anything else. Auren can build the wheel for you if you'd rather not source a builder.
Fit the rotor. Mount a Centerlock disc rotor and tighten the lockring to the rotor maker's torque spec (typically around 40 Nm).
Fit the wheel. Slide the wheel into the fork's 12mm thru-axle dropouts and torque the axle to the fork manufacturer's spec.
Connect the light or charger. Attach the two spade connectors from your dynamo light or USB converter to the terminals on the hub, and route the cable up the fork leg with enough slack for steering.
Check it works. Lift the front wheel and spin it — the light should come on above walking pace. Confirm the rotor runs true in the caliper and the wiring is clear of the rotor and tyre.
SP Dynamo (officially Shutter Precision Co., Ltd.) is a Taiwanese manufacturing company specialising in lightweight, high-efficiency bicycle dynamo hubs and lighting systems.
Shutter Precision backs this product with a 2-year manufacturer warranty, honoured locally by Auren.
Auren designs and builds in Melbourne. One workshop, one builder, frames made by the person you can actually reach.
Every Auren titanium bike comes out of a simple idea. Founder and engineer Will Young wanted to build custom titanium the way it should be done: a frame shaped around the rider, not picked from a range. Your geometry, your parts, your bike, designed with you from the first conversation to the final build.
Building direct means there's no dealer between you and us. When you're planning a build, talking through your fit, or need something sorted years down the track, you talk to Will, the person who made the bike. Every Auren titanium is built to last decades and backed by real support that doesn't disappear after delivery.
That's reflected in our reviews: five stars across Google and Trustpilot.
