The Ananda R900

Automatic Gearbox Motor, a commute of the future

You pedal, it works out the rest

This guide covers:

  • what the R900 is and who makes it
  • how it decides when to change gear
  • what riding with it is like
  • why it pairs well with a belt drive
  • the full spec sheet
  • the riding it’s built for
  • how Auren uses it in the EV5
01

What the R900 is

A motor and a gearbox in one hub.

The R900 puts two things in the back wheel that usually live apart: an electric motor and a set of gears. The motor drives the wheel, and a 3-speed gearbox inside the same housing changes gear on its own as you ride.

Ananda launched it at China Cycle in May 2025, where it won a Gold Creative Award. The name is less familiar than the company’s size suggests, because Ananda builds motors for other bike brands rather than selling its own bikes. It was founded in 2011 and makes around 7 million motors a year across six factories.

How it decides when to shift

Three sensors and one rule.

The R900 changes gear using a system Ananda calls PedalFlow, which reads three things as you ride:

Torque.

How hard you're pushing on the pedals.

Cadence.

How fast your legs are turning.

Speed.

How fast the bike is moving.

From those, it follows one rule. Push harder while slowing down and it drops to a lower gear; ease off as you pick up speed and it moves up. Each change takes about 0.2 seconds, and it can shift while the bike is stopped.

What it's like to ride

Gears you stop thinking about.

Riding a bike with an R900 mostly feels like the gears have disappeared. You pedal, and the right gear is there. Ride On described its first ride as “silky smooth”, and Electric Bike Review found it shifted cleanly on a steep ramp, both from a dead stop and at about 16km/h.

  1. 01

No gear to remember at the lights.

With a derailleur, you have to shift down before you stop, or you pull away in a tall gear and push hard to get moving. The R900 drops to a low gear by itself when you stop, so you set off in a low gear without thinking about it.

  2. 02

    Gears that stay in adjustment.

There’s no derailleur or gear cable to stretch, get knocked on a bike rack or drift out of tune, which is what usually makes gears skip or slip. The gears sit sealed inside the hub.

  3. 03

    Shifts while you pedal.

Gear changes happen in about 0.2 seconds as you ride, including on a climb, without easing off the pedals.

04

Why it pairs well with a belt

A single speed outside, so it can run a belt.

All the gearing sits inside the hub, so everything outside it is a single speed: one ring at the front, one sprocket at the back, in a straight line. That’s what makes a belt drive possible. A belt can’t move across a cassette the way a chain does on a derailleur bike, so on most bikes with gears it isn’t an option.

Derailleur with a chain

  • Gears exposed, on a cassette.
  • Chain needs regular cleaning and oil.
  • Chain stretches with use and gets replaced.
  • Derailleur and cable need adjusting.

R900 with a belt

  • Gears sealed inside the hub.
  • Belt needs no oil.
  • Belt doesn't stretch the way a chain does, and quality carbon belts are rated past 30,000km.
  • No derailleur to adjust.

Put together, that’s where the low maintenance comes from: sealed gears, nothing to adjust, and a belt that doesn’t need oil. The R900 also comes in a chain version (3.8kg, against 3.9kg for the belt version), so not every R900 bike runs a belt.

The R900 spec sheet

The full specs.

SpecR900What it means
Torque 50Nm Pulling power at the wheel
Weight 3.8kg (chain) / 3.9kg (belt) Motor and gearbox together
Gears 3, automatic Shifts on its own
Gear ratios 1:1 / 1:1.272 / 1:1.619 Third gear is about 62% higher than first
Shift time About 0.2s Changes as you pedal
Sensors Torque, cadence, speed Read by PedalFlow to pick the gear
Water rating IPX6 Protected against strong water jets
Drive Chain or belt Belt possible because the outside is single speed
Axle spacing (OLD) 148mm Needs a frame built to fit it
Rated power 250W Australian legal limit for pedal-assist eBikes
Tuning Programmable by the bike maker Shift points can differ between bikes

On a ride, the rows that matter most are torque, gear range and water rating. 50Nm and three gears suit commuting and city riding, and IPX6 covers riding in the rain and washing the bike.

The riding it's built for

Made for commuting and city riding.

The R900 is built for commuting, city streets, bike paths and rolling routes. Ride On describes it as pitched at urban and light recreational riding rather than performance cycling, and the numbers line up with that: 50Nm of torque and three gears spanning about 62%.

Worth knowing

For steep technical trail or heavy cargo, a higher-torque mid-drive with a wider gear range is the better match. The R900 is also new, launched in 2025, so there isn’t long-term ownership data on it yet.

The R900 in the Auren EV5

How the EV5 uses it.

The Auren EV5 runs the R900 at 250W and 50Nm, paired with a carbon belt drive. That puts everything above on one bike: a low gear waiting when you pull away, no derailleur to adjust, and no chain to oil. We chose it because the brief for the EV5 was components that don’t ask anything of the owner.

Frequently asked

R900 questions, answered.

What is the Ananda R900?

A rear hub eBike motor with a 3-speed gearbox built into the same housing. The gearbox changes gear automatically as you ride, so there’s no shifter to use.

Do you have to change gears on an R900?

No. It changes gear automatically based on how hard you’re pedalling, your cadence and your speed, and drops to a low gear by itself when you stop.

How does the R900 know when to shift?

Its PedalFlow system reads your pedalling torque, cadence and speed. Push harder while slowing down and it drops a gear; ease off as you pick up speed and it moves up. Each change takes about 0.2 seconds.

Can the R900 run a belt drive?

Yes. The gears are inside the hub, so the drivetrain outside is a single speed, which is what a belt needs. There’s a chain version too.

Can the gears go out of adjustment?

There’s no derailleur or gear cable to stretch or get knocked out of line, which is what usually makes gears skip or slip. The gears are sealed inside the hub.

The R900 in short

What changes when the gears look after themselves.

The R900 isn’t meant for every eBike - but for someone who wants a smooth and seamless bike every time they jump on to go to work or explore their local tracks, it’s pretty hard to beat. Hope this helped. If you've got a question about the R900 or how it rides, just ask.
